What’s Up With the Poor Air Quality in Southern Texas?

Maybe burning sugarcane fields has something to do with it.

We arrived in Southern Texas on January 1 and since then have received an Air Quality Alert on our cell phones almost every day. Of course we wondered what causes poor air quality in this area but had not researched it. We have driven by a lot of factories but only in the bigger cities. We are located one hour south of Corpus Christi right on the Gulf. We are not used to getting these kind of alerts on our phones.

Yesterday we drove down to Brownsville and headed over to Boca Chica Beach. We drove by several sugarcane fields. I had never seen sugarcane fields before so of course I took a lot of pictures. We drove on out to the beach and collected shells.

On the way back from the beach we saw fire and smoke. The closer we got the worse it got. Pretty soon we realized they were burning the sugarcane fields! We had to drive right by the burning fields and breathe in…
