Highway 90 across southern Texas from Del Rio to Marathon is a nice drive. The road is in great condition. We didn’t lose any cookies on this drive. Sometimes the road is so bumpy Rich hollers out at random times, “Hold onto your cookies!”

Traffic was minimal today. There are no rest areas on Highway 90 but there are pull off areas with a picnic table or two where you can at least stop. The view was beautiful traveling this highway, and today even more so with the ice storm. Hills began to appear and turn into small mountains with canyons are either side.

Shortly after Del Rio heading west there is one border patrol checkpoint. We have gone through several of these now being in southern Texas so close to the border.

Be warned that gas stations and towns are few and far between. Get gas when you can. There is no civilization on this highway.

The one or two small towns that you do travel by are more abandoned than inhabited. It rained all day so I didn’t take many pictures again, but I did get a few of some abandoned buildings. There are no houses filled with living people along the way, but rather buildings with boards over the windows and doors.

There is also little to no cell phone service along highway 90. Spotty at best near the so called town areas.

As the temperature dropped from 40 to 32, the rain began to form ice on the brush and bushes along the side of the road. The cactus, small trees, and ground vegetation slowly took on a glistening white hue and a shiny frozen covering. Fog formed around the top of the little mountains and rocky hill tops.

Once we reached Marathon I had only one navigational job — to make sure Rich turned left on 385. There is only one…
