Freer is a small town in Texas with a population of only 2,818 people at the 2010 census. It is about 80 miles west of Corpus Christi.

Having a tourist attraction like the largest rattlesnake in the world is a great way to bring people to the area. We wouldn’t have gone to this little town if it weren’t for the snake. And while we were there we ate at the local Dairy Queen.

The town of Freer holds an annual rattlesnake roundup every spring. Evidently, Freer is a rattlesnake dominant area.

There are several different kinds of rattlesnakes in the area but the most dangerous is the western diamondback rattlesnake.

There is not an evident overpopulation of rattlesnakes in the area. Predators like owls, eagles, hawks, coyotes, and bobcats keep the population under control.

While in Texas I have not seen any real snakes. They are not on my list to see so that’s okay with me.
