I love sharing with you all the places we visit and what a treat this place was. As we were driving along Ocean Blvd visiting all the city parks in Corpus Christi yesterday, we turned on Ennis Joslin Road and came across the Hans & Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge. Hans & Pat Suter were voices for the environment in the 1960’s when oil was being flushed into the Oso Creek. They fought to prevent dumping into Corpus Christi Bay in a time when it wasn’t normal to fight for environmental causes.

This refuge was first dedicated in 1987 and was rededicated in 1999. The wooden deck has four nice signs telling about the migratory birds found in the refuge. This is so helpful to people like me who are not familiar with many different kinds of birds. I wish I would have been able to see them all.

It says that hundreds of different species of birds migrate north to southern Texas to breed each year. This refuge preserves the sensitive lands that are vital to so many of these birds for mating. I don’t know how many different species we saw, but it was a lot.

The wooden boardwalk was nice, but in need of a hammer to pound down all the nails that were sticking up. I tripped on one of them. And maybe just a little trimming back of the weeds growing into the boardwalk. Other than those minor things, this was a great boardwalk through the grassland.
This is also where we saw the blooming prickly pear cactus in January.
