Shep — 1970 to 1984

The first dog I remember was Shep. I think she was a collie. I don’t know for sure when she was brought home. I had two older brothers still living at home. I was the youngest of four. My older sister was already married and moved out, so I know we got Shep sometime after July 1970.

My oldest brother brought home a stray puppy that had been left at the gas station where he worked. All I remember is that us two younger kids fell in love with her as soon as we saw her. I remember sitting on the back porch steps talking about naming her before dad came home from work, because if we already named her he would have to let us keep her. And he did. She was an outside farm dog. Mom and dad never allowed any dogs in the house.

I found these pictures of her. The first is from 1977 when she got hit by a car on the road and broke her leg. The second was taken in 1983.
