We found this hidden gem while exploring the town of Homosassa, Florida.

The Salt Marsh Trails are part of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and are maintained by the Friends of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. This is the only land access. Most of the refuge is only accessible by boat.

If you can find a place to park at the entrance on South Mason Creek Road, there is a nice wide, solid trail only 1/2 mile long that leads straight back to the Lastinger Observation Tower. This trail is considered easy and was packed solid the day we were there. I believe it would be fine for even the most challenged person. Once again this is just off the road and there is only enough room for three or four cars to park at a time. Dogs on a leash are welcome on this main trail. I would be hesitant to take them on the surrounding trails though.

There is a marked birding trail that circles the area with either side ending up at the same tower, but the side trails were too muddy the day we were there. We saw a few large birds in the water. I am not positive, but I believe the first bird is a Great Blue Heron and the second one is some kind of crane. My photos here are not the best quality because I tried to zoom in.

These birds appear to be different species, but I could be wrong. I am not a birding expert. I tried to identify them on the internet. I get frustrated when I can’t figure it out. If I am wrong, and someone knows what they are, please let me know. I would love to know for sure.

There are no other facilities at this site. It is part of a wildlife refuge and is not intended to be a park. Take only pictures and leave only footprints. The beautiful marsh is home to…
