This little gem of history in Fanning Springs, Florida was built in 1838 during the Second Seminole War. It was an important Army post and was frequently visited by President Zachary Taylor. It was a key base for operations on the Suwannee River. Supplies were mainly shipped by boat until the railroad was completed that crossed the river.

Because the fort was made of real wood in this warm, humid climate, the remnants of the original fort have all but completely disappeared. The gate has been reconstructed leading to a walkway through a nice park memorializing those who served and died in this place along the Suwannee River.

This park is located on the north side of the US 19 bridge in Fanning Springs, Florida. It will only take a few minutes to walk the short distance out to the river.
