From December to February, Sandhill Cranes leave their breeding grounds in Canada and travel south for warmer weather in Texas. We have been seeing increased numbers of them in the fields surrounding us. One field might have a couple hundred at one time, and then this field only had three.

These birds can reach four-feet tall but may only weigh ten pounds. This is because their bones are hollow to allow for easier flying. One designating feature of the Sandhill Crane is the bustle of feathers over their tail end.

This being our first lengthy stay in Texas has allowed to see several of these birds around us. I am thoroughly enjoying all the nature and new birds, animals, and trees I am seeing for the first time.
