It is early in the morning on December 23, 2022 and I am sitting at the table in our Newmar Scottsdale motorhome in Florida typing on the laptop. It is quiet and peaceful. The two-foot Christmas tree* sitting on the table luminates a soft white glow — just enough to see by. And I can see the colorful string of Christmas lights* clipped to the awning outside through the front door window.

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. I feel nostalgic as I think of the next two days, but not melancholy. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day have not been packed with family for us for several years now due to our children being grown, married with families of their own, in-laws to spend time with, and being away from Ohio serving in the military.

This may be our first Christmas away from Ohio, but it will not be our first Christmas alone. Over the years my husband and I have spent many Christmas’s alone watching television and napping, going to a movie, or eating at an open Chinese Restaurant. And besides — video calls, Facetime, and Skype are nearly just as good as being there in person.
