1959 Chevy Station Wagon. Photo taken by my mother.

Today is National Old Stuff Day. The challenge? To find something old and write about it. But what constitutes old?

Antiques are items which are at least 100 years old. Anything between 50 and 100 years old is considered vintage. If an item is 20 years old it is considered a classic, but only if it is an outstanding example of its kind.

I was looking through files of photos for something old to write about. I was going through my mother’s shoeboxes of photos several years ago, and scanning them to my hard drive, when I found three pictures of the brand new station wagon they purchased in 1959.

They must have really liked this station wagon. The first photo above was taken in September 1959 when they first got it. Since this car today would be 64 years old it is considered vintage, but maybe a classic vintage.

All my mother could tell me was that it was a Chevrolet, and it was mint green. She didn’t know what kind of Chevrolet. There were Brookwoods, Parkwoods, and Nomads. She had no idea. I think it looks like a Parkwood.

The Brookwoods were the cheapest model, the Parkwoods were the next step up, and the Nomads were the luxury brand. Mom and Dad were not poor, but they weren’t wealthy either.
