I Think We Drove Too Far South

Driving down questionable dirt roads

After leaving the Civil War Battlefield site off of Highway 4 (see previous article here), I told Rich we might as well drive that dirt road as far as it would go and see what we could see. After all, it was a National Wildlife Refuge.

And besides, Rocket Ranch was down there and I wanted to see what that was. We might even be able to see the Rio Grande.

I am always sending him down questionable dirt roads.

The road was made of dirt, but easily drivable. We did pass one car. We drove the road slowly, looking for wildlife mainly, all the way to Rocket Ranch only to find out it was gated, and the gate was closed. Darn.

Well, the road keeps going so keep on driving.

Pretty soon we came upon a sign that read, “WARNING — High Criminal Activity Area — Illegal Human Smuggling and Trafficking — Illegal Drug Smuggling and Trafficking — Illegal Firearms Smuggling and Trafficking — Subjects are armed and dangerous.”

We decided not to drive the road the rest of the way to the end. Instead we turned around and headed back to Highway 4. On the way, we passed another car headed in the other direction. I wonder who they were? Were they tourists like us? I will never know.
