Estero Llano Grande State Park is a large wetland space where hundreds of birds gather in southern Texas. It is part of the Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area and an important stopping point for migratory birds. Its varied landscape of small lakes and woodlands attracts many species each year. Over 250 species of birds have been documented and recorded here. It is truly a bird watchers paradise.

The wooden viewing deck of the visitor center is a great place to view Ibis Pond and get photos of the many species of ducks and white Ibis birds in the water. The American Coot with its bright white bill was also abundant here.

A tree full of red-winged blackbirds greeted us as we headed down the trail to the excellent boardwalk behind Ibis Pond. The boardwalk treks all the way past Ibis Pond to the small pond called Avocet Pond. There are nice benches along the way to sit quietly and watch for birds in the trees.
